Betting on the 2013 French Open
24 May 2013
With the shock news for British tennis fans that Andy Murray has pulled out of the French Open, betting may swing to Nadal who returns after a long absence.
The men's singles title in the French Open is up for grabs with British hope Murray not in the running after he battles with a back injury he sustained during the Rome masters. While it is known that Murray was not comfortable at Roland Garros with its clay courts, you can never be sure he wouldn't have surprised his fans with an amazing performance.
But now we'll never know as he takes some time off to heal and then prepare for Wimbledon. But what of the possibilities now in the French open?
Who Will Win?
There are realistically only three main contenders for that title, with Nadal looking like a good bet to take it since he returns to the courts after a long e off through injury. Nadal has a good pedigree at this event having won every year except 2009 since 2005.
But it is his recent form that puts him in the running, with wins in the last six tournaments out of eight he has played since he returned to fitness and being runner up in the two he didn't win. After the Rome masters, Nadal was reported as saying "I'm playing much better than I dreamed of a few months ago. I'm doing the right things to play well."
The main rival to Nadal will almost certainly be ATP ranked No.1 Novak Djokovic. The French Open is a target for Djokovic since it's the only Grand Slam event he has not yet won, so expect him to put up a tough fight for the title.
Outside Bet
If you are considering a good outside bet, then Roger Federer could upset things and pull off a shock win. He has won this tournament once before and although his recent form may not be what it once was, he is capable of raising his game when you least expect him to.
There are several other possibilities from lower ranked players including Tomas Berdych, Ernests Gulbis, Jo-Wilfried Tsonga and Grigor Dimitrov.
